She is very good at a high profile activity in the school. This gives her a ready-made crew to hang with and they are all polite, smart kids. She loves high school so far.

This particular school seems very good at coming up with a lot of extra-curricular activities for kids to slot in to.

Unless you've got a crew to hang with, high school is a jungle. My teacher at the time was Mrs. Halat - little old bird of a lady from the depression era - and tough as nails on students.

She was dismissed shortly after a battle with the father of the class psycho. Every class has one, and ours was a boy that had flunked two grades by grade 5 and the way it was going - he was going to flunk grade 5 too. The father showed up during class hours, red faced and bellowing, demanding Old Lady Halat's head on a pike. The principal was called and the battle went outside into the hallway where the father berated Mrs. Halat for picking on his son. Voices were raised and us kids in the class could hear most of it.

The father and the principal were pushing Halat to pass the boy through. The old bird told them to stuff it - she had 8 kids in her class that were reading and writing at or below grade two level - and she would quit or be fired before she was going to pass them. She was putting in extra hours, making them stay after school, and pushing them as hard as she could to catch them up...but us kids and our idiot parents saw that as abuse. A couple weeks later she disappeared and we learned that she had 'retired'. As a student I hated that woman with the heat of a thousand suns...but looking back I now see the battle she faced. I realize the class psycho probably had an abusive drunk for a father. How different the things look through the eyes of an adult.

Modern society won't tolerate a the kind of teachers that will produce the students you want, Bob. Self esteem is more important than education. Helicopter parents refuse to let their kids make the mistakes that teach them the relationships between actions and consequences. Kids used to spend summer holidays working with adults and being taught to emulate them - today they hang with other kids and they have no role models - so they become feral mutts without direction.

This is equally the fault of the parent, Bob. We need to either home school our kids ourselves - or work to cover the things the public schools can't provide. Glen Filthiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03256741311142364722noreply@blogger.com
