They stamped an impression of chivalry on my young mind, which survived even later in life when I was flirting with some pretty crazy and/or poisonous ideas. It was always axiomatic that a man's job was to protect and look out for weaker creatures like women, children, and the elderly- even when the "man" is an alien from planet Krypton or a talking anthropomorphic fox. ("Robin Hood" also gives a child an accurate and helpful introduction to taxation and the nature of the state). Leftism is basically the diametrical opposite of chivalry- let women and children suffer because we wouldn't want to "oppress" the criminals and thugs who prey on them, nor do we want to make woman feel bad by implying that they're not strong enough to protect themselves. More than once, I almost became a leftist, but Superman always dragged me back.

Even today, I collect any movie I find that has expresses the same spirit- The Mark of Zorro, El Cid, The Prisoner of Zenda, etc. It seems like the mainstream entertainment industry decisively lost the ability to tell those kinds of stories at some point between the mid-Eighties and the late-Nineties. Occasionally something like "The Incredibles" will slip through the system, but it's mostly deconstructionist/nihilist fare.Enkidunoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8497093028548856666.post-91273422749302188132016-07-22T09:27:00.292-04:002016-07-22T09:27:00.292-04:00You should look up at YouTube Bandit from Jonny Qu...You should look up at YouTube Bandit from Jonny Quest.
