They were great, full of excitement and a lot of really good values too.

My grandfather got me hooked on Zane Grey and Louis L'Amour whose books were also full of excitement and good values. I found Tolkien on my own when I was 11. In fact by the time I entered junior high school I'd read quite the collection of classics in a wide variety of genres. Which was good because when I hit junior high school I had an English teacher who was determined to prove that she knew and understood teenagers.

To prove this she tried to get us to read Judy Blume. Fortunately, Blume's angst-ridden, whiny, and rather perverted characters simply couldn't compare to Frodo, the Sacketts, and John Carter. I been sufficiently inoculated by my exposure to good writing that it protected me from my exposure to that trash.

Now, I'm working to give my kids what I had. We have more books than we have bookshelves for and I make sure they have exposure to a wide variety of classics in all genres that I know have good values for them. Most of them are old. I have a hard time finding modern books that I think aren't trash and Judy Blumeish.Gwennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8497093028548856666.post-44208131544877717192013-05-23T10:07:06.431-04:002013-05-23T10:07:06.431-04:00"I see no solution to any of these problems e..."I see no solution to any of these problems except to get rid of the government schools. Unfortunately, private schools aren't going to be any better if they imitate the government schools."

While having an animated discussion with the principal at a "Catholic" elementary school over the fact that our then 5th grade son was being taught "Sex Education" in that most "holy" of environments, upon our criticism of such the nun retorted with the following: "We pride ourselves on the fact that our curriculum is same as District X."

I replied, "The why the hell am I paying you tuition money to do what my property tax dollars already are in the public schools?"

We began home schooling our children the following academic year. So far we have a Summa Cum Laude graduate now a semester away from matriculating through law school, two Magna Cum Laude graduates and one a mere 17 years of age.

Stop the Madness.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
